HOV Injury Intelligence

Data Sources & Citations

Every dataset the Injury Intelligence Center uses — or is preparing to use — is registered here with its coverage, status, and known limitations. If a number appears in our research, its source appears on this page.

Research by HOV Injury IntelligenceLegal review by Serge Hovhanessian, Esq.Methodology v1.0Updated

Status meanings: Integrated — the source has been ingested, validated, and feeds published analysis. Integration planned — the source is verified as a candidate and documented here, but no data from it has been ingested or published yet. Sources are accessed in accordance with their terms of use; access dates are recorded at first ingestion, never backfilled.

Florida Crash Dashboard & Traffic Crash Reports

Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV)

Integration planned

Florida's state repository for traffic crash reports. FLHSMV publishes statewide and county-level crash summaries and operates the Florida Crash Dashboard.

Coverage:
State of Florida (statewide and by county)
Time coverage:
Published annually; dashboard data subject to ongoing revision
Update frequency:
To be confirmed at integration
Date accessed:
Not yet accessed for ingestion

Known limitations:

  • Records reflect reported crashes only; unreported crashes are not captured.
  • Recent periods are subject to reporting delays and later revision.

Signal Four Analytics

University of Florida GeoPlan Center

Integration planned

A statewide crash analytics platform hosted by the University of Florida that geocodes Florida crash reports for analysis and mapping. Access requires an approved account, and use is subject to the platform's terms.

Coverage:
State of Florida
Time coverage:
To be confirmed at integration
Update frequency:
To be confirmed at integration
Date accessed:
Not yet accessed for ingestion

Known limitations:

  • Geocoding accuracy varies; some crashes cannot be located precisely.
  • Access and redistribution are governed by the platform's terms of use, which will be reviewed before any integration.

FDOT Open Data Hub

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)

Integration planned

FDOT's public GIS and open-data portal, including roadway characteristics data (e.g., centerline mileage) needed for per-mile crash-rate methodologies.

Coverage:
State of Florida
Time coverage:
Varies by dataset
Update frequency:
Varies by dataset
Date accessed:
Not yet accessed for ingestion

Known limitations:

  • Roadway inventory datasets cover the state highway system in most detail; local-road attributes may be less complete.

Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS)

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Integrated

The federal census of fatal motor-vehicle crashes on public roads, published annually as national CSV files (U.S. government work, public domain). The authoritative national source for fatal-crash analysis. Ingested for Orange County, Florida from the 2019–2024 national files.

Coverage:
United States (fatal crashes only); ingested subset: Orange County, Florida
Time coverage:
2019–2024 annual files as published at access date; files may be revised if NHTSA republishes them
Update frequency:
Annual
Date accessed:
2026-07-11

Known limitations:

  • Covers fatal crashes only — no injury or property-damage crashes.
  • NHTSA may republish annual files; figures should be revalidated when a source file changes.
  • Trafficway identifiers use route designations (e.g., SR-50); mapping to street names uses a documented alias table.
  • Commercial-vehicle involvement is not classified in this integration.
